Sunday Post #2

Sunday Post is a meme hosted by Kimba @ Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It's purpose is to recap over what you did this week and your plans for next week.

This week I finished reading  The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and I reviewed it here. I started Pride and Prejudice and I'm nearly finished with it. I'll review it when I'm finished. I will hopefully be reading UR by Stephen King next. It's a short story so I should be starting something new soon after that.

I reviewed Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro which I read a few weeks ago.

I will be buying some books on Tuesday so I'll hopefully have a book haul post for that. I will be reading and reviewing the books I get.

I have made progress with my classics challenge. I have read two out of the seven classics this week.

I made some goals for this summer and one of them is to read and watch all of the Harry Potter series again. I started that yesterday and watched the first movie, The Philosopher's Stone. I will hopefully have some sort of a discussion post about the movies when I'm finished watching them next weekend. I'll do the same when I have the books read.

I also have a book haul on friday in which I got many awesome titles from NetGalley. Those books are my top priority to be read and reviewed.

I also made a giveaway and you can win many great prizes such as the Harry Potter series and some awesome YA titles.

What did you read this week? What are your plans for next week? Let me know in the comments!

Summer 2012 Reading Plans

So, I have quite a few summer 'goals' and I thought I'd share them with you.

  1. Read and watch the Harry Potter series again. I'm going to watch the series in one week, so a movie every night starting from tonight (2nd June). I should be finished by Friday 9th June as there is 2 movies for the last book. I am not going to read the entire series because it's a lot more time consuming than watching the movies but I'm going to be reading my favourites which are Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I will be waiting a couple of weeks after watching the movies before reading the books because I don't want it too fresh in my mind or I won't enjoy it. But I do want to be able to make direct comparisons between the books and movies which I haven't been able to do because there has always been too much of a gap between watching and reading the Harry Potter series so I end up forgetting things.
  2. Read all seven of the Stephen King books currently shelved on my TBR. I have UR, The Drawing of the Three, Under the Dome, Needful Things, Bag of Bones, Cell and 'Salem's Lot. I have had 'Salem's Lot, The Drawing of the Three and Under the Dome for so long. I got UR on my Kindle yesterday and I got the other three only recently in a second hand bookshop.
  3. Read as many new authors as possible. My specific goal would be to read at least five new authors this summer. I tend to stick the same authors for quite some time and then move on to something else but I think I'll try and vary it as much as I can this summer.
  4. Read as far as The Wind Through the Keyhole in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. This book is book 4.5 in the Dark Tower series which was released in April this year. It will hopefully still be available in hardcover by the time I get around to buying it which is why I want to read as far as that this summer. I started the series about two years ago and read only the first book. I don't know why I didn't continue. I have the second book on my TBR shelf, linked above so I will read that soon.

Have you any goals for the summer? Let me know in the comments.

Friday Finds #1

Friday Finds is a meme hosted by Should Be Reading. It showcases the books you ‘found’ and added to your To Be Read (TBR) list… whether you found them online, or in a bookstore, or in the library — wherever! (they aren't necessarily books you purchased).

This week, the books I got are mostly on my Kindle. Most of the Kindle books are from NetGalley which is my new found love!

Bought books:

Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. I own all of Austen's works (including Lady Susan) in a hardback collector's edition but I don't like reading them so I am buying single copies also and those are the only singles I have so far. I got the 3 of these for €6 which was quite a bargain considering they were brand new.

Bought Kindle Books:

Fifty Shades Trilogy by E.L James

NetGalley Books:

Timeless Innocents by Janis Susan May (released on June 11th 2012)
Double Blind by Brandilyn Collins (released on October 15th 2012, no cover)
What I Didn't Say by Keary Taylor (released April 30th 2012)
One Moment by Kristina McBride (released on June 26th 2012)
A Slow Cold Death by Susy Cage  (released on November 1st 2012)
White Lies by Jeremy Bates (released May 7th 2012)
The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen by Susin Nielsen (released September 11th 2012)

Esther Greenwood is at college and is fighting two battles, one against her own desire for perfection in all things - grades, boyfriend, looks, career - and the other against remorseless mental illness. As her depression deepens she finds herself encased in it, bell-jarred away from the rest of the world. This is the story of her journey back into reality. Highly readable, witty and disturbing, The Bell Jar is Sylvia Plath's only novel and was originally published under a pseudonym in 1963. What it has to say about what women expect of themselves, and what society expects of women, is as sharply relevant today as it has always been. - Book Depository

WOW! That was all I could say when I finished this book. I wanted to constantly talk about it and just express my undying love for Esther Greenwood. But, unfortunatly, I am not surrounded by people who love books, nor am I surrounded by people who even like the sound of my voice. But, that's besides the the point. The point is, everyone should read this book. Everyone!

I'll admit, I was not expecting what I got. I was expecting something more like Girl, Interrupted. I am happy I didn't get that, though. I got something much, much more. But when I received the book in the post I was disappointed at the synopsis. It seemed a bit boring and cliché but nevertheless, I read it and had absolutely no regrets.

It begins with Esther Greenwood on a night out with her friend and they meet two guys. One is very attracted to Esther and one is attracted to her friend but Esther doesn't like him. This is where I sighed, put the book down and didn't touch it until I was forced to stay outside for an hour. I had nothing better to do, so I read this. When I finished the first 100 pages two hours later, I was amazed and couldn't stop reading from there on.

I won't talk too much about what happens in this book. Let's just say, I could relate to Esther a lot. She began to get very stressed and depressed. She described it as 'not being able to read or sleep' which was very worrying for her. I like how Plath doesn't automatically make her depressed, suicidal and every other mental illness possible as some authors would. She simply allows Esther's actions and thoughts to show she is depressed and is slowly spiraling out of control. Esther, as people suffering depression are, very unaware of why they are feeling this way and they begin to disconnect from the world. This was portrayed very well. I think the word 'depressed' was used only once or twice in this book but the illness is still very present.

As I said, it's nothing like Girl, Interrupted so don't be put off by her illness. It's much more than that. It's also about finding her place in society and feeling wanted and worth it. She doesn't have many friends because she doesn't like letting people in, which I can relate to again. It is also not 'the female version' of Catcher in the Rye as many people have compared it to. It has similar aspects to it but it's not that. It's a book all on it's own that deserves no other name put next to it but the title itself.

I also loved the concept behind the title. You'll find that out when you read it. It's not a spoiler but I think you should find out for yourself. Just, please. Stop what you're doing right now and go buy and read this book. Now!
